Ancient Greek music is the foundation of Western musical culture, with a history stretching from the 8th century BC to Roman times.
The ancient Greeks considered music (musical art) as a gift from the gods, associating it with Apollo and the Muses.
Music played a central role in education, religion and public events. It was based on scales (modes) and used instruments such as the lyre, flute, guitar and drum.
Important musicians of antiquity were Terpandros, considered the “father of Greek music”, Sakadas the Argive, a famous piper, and Pindar, known for his choral hymns. Theorists such as Pythagoras and Aristoxenos contributed to the foundation of music theory.
Today, modern scholars and musicians such as Christodoulos Hallaris and Petros Tabouris are trying to revive this ancient musical tradition.
