The History of Bouzouki
The bouzouki, the iconic stringed musical instrument of Greece, has a rich history dating back to the depths of the centuries. Originating from the ancient pandura, it evolved into its present form at the beginning of the 20th century.
The bouzouki became known through rebetiko, the “music of the marginalized”, which developed in the ports and slums. After World War II, the instrument gained wider acceptance through popular song.
Top bouzouki artists include Marko Vamvakaris, the “patriarch” of rebetiko, Vassilis Tsitsanis who elevated the genre, Manolis Chiotis who introduced the four-string bouzouki, and George Zambeta with his unforgettable compositions.
