The 1960s was a milestone for Greek pop music, as it was the time when the new wave that changed the musical landscape of the country was created.
Influenced by the international trends of the time, such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, Greek artists combined foreign influences with domestic musical tradition.
Chionatoi, the first Greek rock band to record an album, paved the way for artists such as FormiGx and Idalgios. Yannis Poulopoulos, Dimitris Mitropanos and Tolis Voskopoulos became the new stars of singing, while Marinella and Vicky Moscholiou dominated the female scene.
Composers such as Mimis Plessas, Giorgos Katsaros and Stavros Xarchakos created landmark songs, while lyricists such as Lefteris Papadopoulos gave a new dimension to Greek lyrics. This period marked the beginning of the modern Greek music industry.
