Born in Thessaloniki, the Greek pianist Evangelia Mitsopoulou, earning a Bachelor’s degree in musicology and a second degree in Italian from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, she graduated summa cum laude in piano performance from Thessaloniki’s State Conservatory of Music, where she also received highlight marks in harmony, counterpoint, fugue, and orchestration. Work toward her Ph.D. in musicology (2010) at the University Macedonia of Thessaloniki, was crowned by the world-premiere performance of an unpublished solo-piano transcription prepared by Liszt’s pupil Carl Tausig of Liszt’s Dante Symphony. In 2010-2011 Professor Mitsopoulou continued her post-doctoral studies as a Fulbright Artist Scholar at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in the United States under the guidance of Professor Michael Saffle. She has also worked with master pianists Marie-Françoise Bucquet, Luiz de Moura Castro, Bernard Ringeissen, and Martino Tirimo. Her studies with Paul Badura-Skoda in Vienna were supported by a two-year scholarship “Prize Gina Bachauer” from Mundo en Armonia, Madrid; Princess Irene of Spain personally presented her with that award.
“…Ms. Mitsopoulou is a gifted pianist, highly intelligent and experienced as a performer of a wide repertoire…” Paul Badura-Skoda, 2007
Professor Mitsopoulou won first prize in the Panhellenic-Cipriot Piano Competition “Gold Muse” (2003) and she received the “Eleni Tim. As first-prize winner of the 2014 Brandshaw & Buono International Piano Competition, she was invited to present a recital at New York City’s Carnegie Hall.
“It was the consensus of the judges that your performance reflects the depth of interpretation, musicality, and technical expertise needed to distinguish oneself in the world of professional performance, and we are very pleased to award you this honor. We also extend the thanks of our judges and staff, who agree that the high level of your talent made it an honor to have you participate. As a member of the Aristotle University Orchestra, Professor Mitsopoulou interpreted works of Mikis Theodorakis under his direction. She has also given premiere performances of Greek composers’works by Menelaos Pallantios, Christos Samaras, Yorgos Sisilianos, etc, and recently of Aspasia Nasopoulou’s Nanourisma for flute and piano dedicated to her.
